I’ve been a guide for over 50 years and I love everything about it. But the best part is the people you meet.
Last weekend I had a couple, Nathan and Brandi Rossman from Omaha, Nebraska, who were in town for a wedding and also to celebrate their sixth anniversary. They celebrated by surprising each other by doing something the other person doesn’t know.
Brandi had the first half of the day and then Nathan had his surprise for Brandi for the second half of the day.
Brandi’s surprise for Nathan was a half-day guided fishing trip. We had a ball! The fish weren’t exactly jumping in the boat, but we caught enough walleye for them to have a few good meals and they caught and released plenty of pike.
We listened to the Vikings play, shared stories and caught lots of fish. Good memories for all of us.
Water temperatures continue to cool and are now in the upper 50s. By the end of this week, with a few days with highs only in the 40s, the water will cool even further and the fall bite should be in full fire mode.
Most of the walleyes came in 10-12 feet from the edge of the still green weeds on the jigs and minnows.
You will also catch giant perch in these same areas, as well as pike. Most crappie are now in these deep pools where they hit jigs and minnows or plastics.
The fall sting is here and the trees should be in full fall shape by the weekend. It doesn’t get any better than this when spending time outdoors.
Remember to practice selective harvesting, in doing so we will continue to have excellent fishing for years to come.
