At first Rune Factory 4, you will be asked to obtain a fish and deliver it to Vishnal, one of the butlers in training who lives in the west wing of the castle. To this end, you will be presented with a fishing rod and asked to go and catch something for it.
It opens everyone up to fishing and it’s a surprisingly deep mechanic. There is a wide range of different fish to find and there are many factors that go into choosing the fish available.
How to fish
You know you can fish when you pass near a body of water that has a fish shaped shadow swim indoors. These come in four varieties depending on the size of the fish, but otherwise it’s impossible to know which fish it is until you roll it up.
Equip your fishing rod from the menu and cast your line into the water. If your lure hits the fish, it will be surprised, but it will not swim forever – it will only take a moment to turn around.
When a fish is attracted to your lure, it slowly walk towards it and nibble it for a very short time before stepping back. He can do this a maximum of five times before he finally takes a bite.. When it bites you will see water splashing around your lure – hit the action button as soon as you can.
If you are successful you will rewind the fish and the game will tell you how big it is and whether it is the biggest or the smallest specimen of that fish that you caught.

You can fish anywhere in Rune Factory 4 – whenever there is a body of water you can be sure fish can spawn in it. While most fishing grounds have a static list of fish that can be caught there, Selphia is unique in that sense. the fishing spots around the city will change with the seasons.

Fishing Tips
There are a few things you can do to make sure that you are as successful as possible when fishing in Rune Factory 4.
- Improve your cane when you can. Better rods can achieve better load levels and they are less likely to catch trash like cans and boots.
- When participating in Fishing Frenzy Event, you will need more than 20-23 fish to be able to beat Dylas.
- Catching a lot of fish is ideal for improve your cooking skills once you have learned the different sashimi recipes.
- While opting for large fish shadows is a good strategy for catching rarer fish, be aware that some high value items like legendary scales will always have small shadows.
- Fish all the time. Improving your fishing skills will not only will give you better sync windows for catching rare fish, but it will also help your RP and INT stats.
- You can consult your fishing trophies in the basement of your house.
