Mirage turns fishing boat off Cornwall into flying object

Another mirage was filmed off the Cornish coast today (Monday) and it is the tallest “floating boat” we have seen so far.

The amazing photos were taken from Par Beach today.

They show a small dark object that appears to be floating above the sea. Someone on social media even mistook it for a drone that had been seen in the area.

It was actually a fishing boat and it certainly wasn’t hovering above the horizon. The optical illusion is called Fata Morgana and is caused by the similar coloring of the sea and the sky.

Of course, this is not a rare occurrence, but the images capturing the mirage are always amazing to see.

There have been recent examples of Fata Morgana off the coast of Cornwall – one near Gillan on the Helford, which you can read here, and one off Coverack. You can see the photos here.

What is a Fata Morgana?

It is a mirage that normally occurs at sea, but can also occur on land – in deserts for example.

Fata Morgana is, in fact, the Italian name of Morgan le Fay, the powerful enchantress of King Arthur’s legends, who created optical illusions on bodies of water.
