A fisherman was killed and another injured when a small commercial fishing boat collided with a US Coast Guard off Puerto Rico on Monday.

At approximately 2:20 p.m. Monday, the crew of the fast-reacting cutter USCGC Winslow Griesser informed the San Juan sector that the Griesser had collided with a small fishing boat, identified as the Desakata. The two vessels collided about four nautical miles off Dorado, Puerto Rico.

The crew of Griesser recovered the two individuals on board Desakata. Fisherman Carlos Rosario was fatally injured; his brother, Samuel Rosario Beltran, was injured but survived.

The Griesser transported the two fishermen to the San Juan Coast Guard Base for medical attention, and Emergency Medical Services delivered Samuel Rosario to a hospital in San Juan.

A 45-foot response boat crew from Station San Juan was dispatched to the scene to locate the damaged fishing boat.

“We sincerely mourn the death of Carlos Rosario following the collision between a coastguard and the fishing boat Desakatasaid Captain José E. Díaz, commander of the San Juan Coast Guard Sector. “We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, and pray that they find strength during this most difficult time. A thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the causal factors that led to this collision so that we can prevent this type of incident from happening in the future.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of the collision.
