The search is underway for a father and son who disappeared while sailing on Humboldt Bay.

Scott Arbaugh, 68, and his son, Josh Arbaugh, 49, are being searched by Coast Guard vessels and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies after their 16-foot recreational fishing boat was spotted partially submerged in the bay just before midnight on Tuesday.

The men had launched the boat at Fields Landing Tuesday morning to test an engine, according to the Coast Guard. They were last in contact with family members around noon and were reported missing at 9 p.m., officials said.

Their boat was located by a Coast Guard helicopter half a mile north of King Salmon Pier and 1,000 feet offshore. There was no sign of the occupants, officials said.

Tuesday’s weather over Humboldt Bay was clear, with visibility 5 nautical miles and winds blowing from the north at 10 knots, according to the Coast Guard.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay at 707-839-6113.
