A PEMBROKE DOCK man who was unanimously convicted of eight sex offenses involving a child as young as eight has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

David Daniel Roberts, known locally as Dick Crow, faced the jury at Swansea Crown Court, having denied all charges in previous court appearances.

The jury heard how Roberts, 59, of Park Street, Pembroke Dock, subjected the victim to a series of sex offenses between 2005 and 2012, when she was aged between 8 and 14.

During the two-day trial, the victim testified via video link.

The court heard how the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sexually touched, forced to engage in sexual activity and viewed pornographic images.

The victim told the court how on one occasion Roberts knelt in front of her and performed oral sex and she ‘felt his stubble against her legs’ and the incident left her ‘disgusted’.

She said, “It was just dirty. But I was too young to understand.

On another occasion, despite the presence of other people in the room, Roberts placed his hands in his leggings as he sat next to her at the table.

The victim told the court how, as she reached puberty, the defendant fondled her breasts and buttocks and held her waist and he watched her while she was in the shower.

Speaking about the pornographic images, the victim told the court how Roberts had shown her pornographic images of obese women and made reference to what he wanted her to look like when she was older.

The court heard how Roberts would play dares with the victim, daring her to drop her pants, where the defendant would then take pictures, before risking a run naked.

Although the offenses date back nearly a decade, the charges were only brought after the victim confided in a relative in 2020, where police were later contacted.

Peter Rouch of the Crown Prosecution Service told the jury how often in cases like this it can take a long time for the victim to report the crimes.

He said: “Sometimes victims report things immediately while others wait months, years or even decades.

“And it could be for a variety of reasons.

“It could be a feeling of guilt for letting it happen, or a desire to push it out of their minds, hoping it wasn’t true. And maybe also because of the fear of not being believed.

“But maybe they were so young that they just didn’t realize the nature of what happened.”

While testifying, Roberts told the court how the allegations “came out of nowhere.”

Defense attorney Nicola Powell claimed there were inconsistencies in the victims’ evidence, before saying “people tell lies”.

She added: “People make allegations for whatever reason.

“But once a lie has been told, it’s very hard to go back.”

She told the jury that sometimes the more a lie is told, the more the victim becomes convinced that the lie is the truth.

However, Judge Thomas explained to the jury that while some of the victim statements may appear inadmissible, they must take into account that the allegations relate to a time when the victim was very young.

Before adding: “A lot has happened since then and it’s difficult for her to put things in order.”

Upon arrest, Roberts was found to be in possession of an extreme image of animal pornography.

At the defendants’ first appearance in Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court, Roberts faced 10 sex offense charges and another charge of possessing an extreme image of animal pornography.

Roberts pleaded guilty to possessing the image, and the defense argued the case should be dealt with separately from the sex offense charges.

However, Sian Vaughan of the Crown Prosecution Service asked magistrates to send all charges to Crown Court as the victim made reference to animal pornography shown by Roberts in her victim impact statements.

On Thursday, Oct. 13, a jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict for Roberts, 59, on eight sex offense charges.

These included five charges of digitally penetrating the child, two charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

The jury returned a verdict of not guilty on two other counts of having sex with a child.

Following the verdict, Judge Thomas, expressed regret to the jury for having to endure the details of the case and the stress it may have caused them.

He said: “No one, especially me, can underestimate the amount of pressure and stress this has put on you.”

Before adding that these cases are becoming, tragically, more frequent at Crown Court.

Roberts was sentenced to 14 years in prison, including one year on license.

The judge also made Roberts the subject of a sexual abuse prevention order.

In addition to the sentence, Roberts will be placed on the sex offender registry for life.
