Coast Guard searches for man after fishing boat sinks off Oregon

The US Coast Guard said a woman was found unconscious and crews are still searching for a 68-year-old man after a fishing boat sank on Saturday about 35 miles off Florence.

Coast Guard Sector North Bend watchmen received a distress call around midnight Saturday from Mike Morgan reporting that his black and white fishing vessel White Swan III was sinking at the north end of the Heceta Banks fishing area, according to a Coast Guard press release.

Morgan reported that a female crew member was also on board the ship. Officials said a woman was found unconscious with her face in the water between midnight and 3am on Saturday.

An MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Newport also spotted a field of debris from the 32ft vessel and a life raft when they arrived at the scene of an emergency beacon, but had to return to the base due to heavy fog and poor visibility.

Crews of another helicopter, an 87-foot cutter and a 47-foot lifeboat were “saturating” about 21 square miles off Florence to locate Morgan, the coast guard said.

Officials have asked anyone with information that could help locate Morgan to contact the North Bend Sector Command Center at 541-756-9210.
