Aluminum Tiller Fishing Boat Review | 1650 Lund rebel

McKeon Roberts of Wired2fish loves fishing in small waters that are inaccessible from shore or from his kayak, but recently bought a boat to expand his fishing to new waters and different bites. After a year fishing off the setup, he provides an in-depth, experience-based review, covering the boat and key accessories and why he chose each product. *Full product list below.

Affordability, accessibility to small waters, and the size to fit his garage led Roberts to a 16-foot aluminum fishing boat. While the featured 1650 Lund Angler is available in a bachelor (SS) and full windshield (Sport) model, Roberts chose a taller for maximum boat control and usable floor and storage space. Despite its modest size, the V-hull design coupled with a 60hp FourStroke engine makes the boat fully capable of cruising larger waters.

Roberts spent much of his budget on boat monitoring equipment and fish finders. He explains how he uses the transom and bow mounted trolling motors and his unique shallow water anchor. Three Humminbird HELIX Fish Finders (networked) provide sonar and mapping capabilities typically found in larger boats, making this setup an unobtrusive fish catching machine.

With all these accessories comes the need for power. Roberts upgraded the boat to a 24V trolling motor configuration, which requires two 12V batteries connected in series. He chose lithium-ion batteries for space and weight savings; much less weight equals more hull lift and better boat performance. A single Group 27 lead-acid battery powers the rest.

Finally, Roberts discusses some optimization props. A Electronic Support TH Marine KVD Kong provides a strong and rigid solution for the large arc fish finder with the ability to flip it up for better visibility. And he upgraded his original 3-blade aluminum propeller to a 4-blade stainless steel model for faster shots, better bow lift and overall boat control.
